Central High School E. Y. Chapin Library Librarian: Ms. Melinda Martin

The guiding principle of the E.Y.Chapin library is to be of service to the staff and students of Central High School. By augmenting classroom instruction and providing materials for their leisure time activities, the library serves both students and faculty across the curriculum.

The library is staffed by one full-time librarian. To provide assistance to the librarian, seniors of good standing are utilized as library aides. The library contains 13,700 books and 2,085 audio-visual items (Videos, Computer Software, Cassette Tapes, etc.), and subscribes to 30 periodicals and 2 daily newspapers (one local, one national in scope). Audiovisual equipment for classroom use is housed in the library, as well the TV Channel One broadcasting equipment.

The library has a lab of 30 computers with Internet capability for student research. Also kept in the library is a copier, a thermal transparency maker, and a Scantron machine and laminator for faculty use.

The library's collection benefits from an endowment from the late Mr. E. Y. Chapin and his heirs, who administer the trust, which allows the library to purchase and enhance special collections. The Tennessee Room houses books by Tennessee authors and about Tennessee subjects. The extensive information files, containing items clipped from newspapers and periodicals, add to the body of knowledge for students researching local and Tennessee history.

Use of the Chapin funds has given Central's library the financial support to develop an extensive literary criticism collection used by both faculty and students and to keep the book collection up to date.
Students, faculty, and visitors may also browse through old Central yearbooks dating from 1911, as well as some editions of the Central Digest, the student newspaper. Rare books and autographed books are housed in a glass cabinet in the main library for research purposes.

The library's entire collection is accessible online from any networked computer in the school, and both students and teachers are able to create their own bibliographies from this catalog.

LIBRARY POLICIES

We are very proud of Central High School's library and the services it offers to our students. We encourage students and teachers to use the facility and its collection as often as desired for research and pleasure.

The library/media center is open from 6:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (alternating afternoons except Fridays) and during both lunch periods unless a class or testing is in progress. All students are to enter and exit the library through the gated entrance between C and D pods. To protect the carpet, books, and computers, no food or drink is allowed in the library.

Circulation
Students may check out books for a 2-week period. If they are not finished with the book, the book may be returned for a recheck. When a book is overdue, a fine of five cents per day, including weekends and holidays, is assessed. Students are reminded through their third-period class the week the book is due. When the book is overdue, that notice is stamped FINE. Students are required to pay replacement costs for any lost or damaged book. Report cards are held until books are returned, fines paid, etc., and all library obligations are removed.
The library subscribes to 30 periodicals (magazines, newspapers, etc.). These items must be used in the library. Vertical (information) files and reference materials must remain in the library.

Services
A copy machine is available for students; copies are ten cents per sheet.
Internet access is available for student research only. No game-playing or chatting/messaging is allowed on library computers. Printed documents utilize black ink and cost ten cents per sheet. No MP3 players, cell phones, or handheld games/cd players are allowed to be used in the library.

Trying to find your way to leave your mark at Central?
Financial gifts for the library are always welcomed and appreciated. A memorial gift for a book purchase, instead of flowers, to honor a loved one is a lasting memorial. Donating a book is another way to commemorate a student's birthday or graduation. A book is a lasting gift which benefits both students and faculty. All the gifts to the library are income-tax deductible.
